Episode 57 – Isobel Wayrick VP at Mars International

Isobel Wayrick hadn’t even begun high school when she received her first paycheck.

When Isobel was 15 years old, she and her parents immigrated to the U.S. with little money. Determined to afford a college education for their daughter, Isobel’s parents got her a part-time job—another source of income for the family. The Scottish teenager would spend that summer filing papers in a stuffy, dusty attic for Sherwin-Williams.

Over 60 years later, Isobel is an accomplished wildlife photographer and vice president of Mars International.

In this episode, Isobel and I share a humorous and warm-hearted conversation about finding avenues for self-expression, taking the leap to becoming self-employed and ultimately becoming financially independent. Learn more about this baby boomer woman who took money into her own hands, all while having fun.

Episode 56 – Don’t Give Up Your Dreams  – With Kim Manning

Ever since Kim Manning was 10 years old, she planned on becoming an attorney. But at that time, her dream felt like a tall order. Maybe even impossible.

Kim’s parents became separated that same year, and the family’s income plummeted. Kim and her mother landed in welfare housing after losing their home. Relying on food stamps and Medicaid became their new way of life.

But Kim didn’t give up on her dream– and neither did her mother.

In this episode, Attorney Kim Manning, Director of Legal Services at UPMC Susquehanna, tells the story of her mother’s ingenuity and resilience. Relentless and fiercely creative, her mother would make sure that Kim achieved her goal of becoming an attorney.

I hope you enjoy this episode as Kim shares her experience with navigating a career in law, parenting a child with an intellectual disability– and how her mother’s lasting influence has helped her do both.

Episode 55 – A Love Letter to Caregivers

Caregivers tend put the needs of others first, and therefore they are vulnerable to feeling depleted – as though they’re “running on empty”

Take it from Amy Goyer, a music therapist and Family and Caregiving Expert for AARP. Amy has been caring for older adults her entire life, all while writing, advocating and speaking on behalf of families and caregivers.

In this episode, Amy lets me in on her secrets for long-distance caregiving, and how caregivers can use a musical soundtrack to help older adults transition throughout the day.

Please enjoy this episode, as Amy and I discuss tips for caregivers while sharing our personal experiences with humor and empathy.

Sally Balch Hurme is an estate planning elder law attorney and an author of six books. She worked on Capitol Hill for six years, and she realized that it became apparent that a woman needed an advanced degree. She took the LSATs right after a congressman recommended that she learn shorthand and then recommended that the male staffer go to law school. She went to law school in the ‘70s when there were very few women students or professors. She started a practice in Alexandria, Virginia, when there were very few women attorneys. When she decided to start a family, she withdrew from the partnership. She cobbled together part-time positions for a couple of years, so not to have a gap in her resume.
