Episode 37: How Technology Is Contributing to Physician Burnout



Dr. Cadence Kim grew up just outside of San Francisco. Her father was a surgeon and mother an artist. Before she was 10, she knew she wanted to be a physician. Her parents instilled in her the idea that she could do anything if she worked hard enough and that’s been her motto ever since. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Colorado College and attended the University of Rochester, where she obtained her medical degree.

She moved back to California and did a residency in urology at UC Davis. She subsequently moved to Boston for urology fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Boston University. After fellowship, they moved to Philadelphia where she joined the group practice Urological Associates PC. She’s been with the Urological Associates for over 20 years, where she specializes in stone disease, but she sees and treats most other urological conditions. She’s also very involved with the Philadelphia County Medical Society and is currently the president-elect. Her goal is to attract more members, especially women and young physicians.

Melinda Ghilardi is the First Assistant Federal Defender for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the federal defender’s staff in 1986, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Lackawanna County. She’s a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She is a past president of the Lackawanna Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

She and her husband, attorney Sidney J. Prejean, recently received the Robert J. Munley Award for Distinguished Service from Lackawanna Pro Bono. Melinda is a 1976 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and a 1980 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton, where she received the Departmental Award for Public Administration. In 1983, she was awarded a juris doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Episode 34: How a Yale-Trained Physician Takes Things to the Next Level



Dr. Tay is a first-generation immigrant to a Malaysian-Chinese father who had his PhD in medicinal chemistry from the University of Michigan and was a research scientist for over 15 years at Bristol-Myers Squibb, and a Filipino mother who has her master’s in social work and specializes in Alzheimer’s and dementia care for the elderly. She was born in Michigan, but grew up in the suburbs outside of Syracuse, New York. She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology. She also swam for the women’s varsity swim team all four years. She took a year off after college and worked in Singapore and traveled through southeast Asia before returning to Yale University School of Medicine where she completed her medical training.

She completed a pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Boston. She returned to Philadelphia in 2012 to join the faculty at the Perelman School of Medicine as an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics, and an attending physician in the emergency department of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her job combines teaching, mentoring and supervising medical students, residents and fellows at the patient’s bedside with taking direct care of children who come to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia seeking emergency care.
